Help keep Google Answers alive!

Sign our letter to Google!

The Google Answers service has helped many people during its four and a half years of existence, and it continues to do so. Researchers and unpaid commenters formed a community which should not be discarded lightly. Many repeat users were able to easily find answers to difficult questions thanks to the service. Furthermore, Google Answers proved that a living could be made working on the Internet alone, as many researchers worked on the site as their sole source of income.

The numerous social collaboration sites which exist today are, very often, incredibly useful. However, this "hive mind" model cannot be extended to all areas of life. Those seriously seeking knowledge or working on building their reputations as researchers cannot depend on the crowd to select who is right or wrong. The group is not always best at deciding what is actually intellectually and scientifically correct. (Dutch tulip crazes of the 1600s, for example.) While Yahoo! Answers and other services are currently seen as the fabulous new wave, we believe that this is only a fad. While it may always remain trendy and fun to participate in such social networks for many years to come, there will eventually be a return to the time tested model of trusted experts who spend many years in their fields to become competent and earn the trust of others.

We believe that Google is making a mistake in taking down its Google Answers service. Google should continue to provide this valuable community service to the Internet. Please sign our petition.

Here's a video we spent many long tireless hours creating. I must admit it's the most fun I've had in ages!
